YU-HSIEN WU

Wu Yu-Hsien is an independent choreographer, performing artist, and researcher based in Taiwan. After years of intensive dance training as a young person, Wu began to question the limiting power dynamics at play in institutionalized dance education and embarked on a journey of self-directed training. As a dance artist, Wu focuses on exploring dance forms and bodily aesthetics historically excluded from institutional dance training such as Street Dance (Locking, Popping, Animation, and Hip Hop), Flamenco, Butoh, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Wu’s works have appeared at Ladies of hip hop festival(new york), Melbourne Dance Massive, Taipei Arts Festival, We Island Dance Festival, and Chiayi New Style Choreography. In addition to their independent works, Wu has collaborated as well with fellow artists in the fields of music and theatre to develop works in different forms and media, such as Horse Dance Theater, Su Wei-Chia, Wu Su-fen, Hsiao TzuTien, Pisuy Ciyo, and Chen Ying Yun.

Wu regards choreography as a rebellious energy and consciousness and tries to transform this consciousness and energy into a specific dance language. In this way, the dancing body becomes a form of resistance and social participation with the power to create new ways of being in the world. They also respond to the gender conventions of street dance and explore the possibility of creating a degendered street dance body.
